Waterfall in the Stuðlagil canyon in the late autumn.
Eastern Iceland
Limited Edition Prints
About this photo: Here, I stepped away from the traditional view of waterfalls and focused on what remains when the "falling" itself disappears. The flow of energy that still flows through the landscape, even when it is no longer clear whether the water is falling down or rising up, represents for me the essence of the waterfall. Sometimes people wonder about this photo if the water is flowing from the top down... maybe from the bottom up... and it doesn't really matter to me what direction it is. The place where this photo was taken was hard to get to. The waterfall is hidden in a canyon in the east of Iceland where people often go for its fascinating basalt walls, but this waterfall is sometimes overlooked. The day was dark and grey, it was raining with snow and I almost didn't even take off, plus the light was low and the colours seemed to have completely receded. Still, I knew that there was something under that veil of grey, that there were classic Icelandic colours somewhere in that landscape, waiting to be discovered. It was like peering beneath the surface, beneath the mask that the place had taken on in the bad weather. And it was this very colour that reappeared before me at home, during the editing process, when I removed the gray veil of the day. For me, a strong motivation for traveling to see images like this - proof that what we see "in reality" is not the whole truth, that we are working harder beneath the surface.... Behind the scenes: The canyon was until recently "undiscovered" by people - a very strong river used to flow there and the area around the eastern inland highlands is very inhospitable even for weathered Icelanders. But 13 years ago, the river level dropped by almost 9m due to a nearby power plant and a completely unsuspected canyon full of basalt columns appeared. The canyon is now on side 2, may be 3, of all Icelandic tourist catalogs, less so this waterfall. (Note: In addition to the limited edition prints, there are a maximum of 3 Artist Proof Prints (AP) versions of this photograph.)
